forays into photography.

so, as you may know, i'm getting married next week. this is rad and all, but what is WAY MORE AWESOME is that i'm getting a full week in maui, sans blackberry and laptop, to do anything in the world i want. it's a gorgeous place, and it's our honeymoon, so i want to have some kick ass pictures. thusly, about two weeks ago, i began my search to figure out what kind of camera we wanted to get.

we had a few options: iphone with a waterproof case when we go in the ocean, point-and-shoot with a waterproof case, waterproof point-and-shoot, or DSLR and some other option of the above.

i went with that last one.

here, i thank [fry] from shacknews, who sold me his camera at a ridiculously low price and started me on this journey. here, i also thank cailin, who owns the same model camera and gave me a crash course last weekend. finally, i thank my father, who gave me a canon rebel 35mm back in sixth grade and taught me enough about photography to make it such that i will not suck horrifically with this camera now.

tonight, i spent the evening shooting pictures of flowers, food, and my pets. unfortunately, these photos are a bit worse than they should be for my first go at this because i am pretty much a vampire and there is not enough light in my house. so for these photos, i am using a Canon Rebel XSi with the stock 18-55mm lens (and as i'm checking that lens, i'm realizng i'm an idiot and didn't put on the stabilizer. huh. woops. i would have wanted to practice with and without that.) anyway, i had to use 1600ISO due to the light and for the most part i'm at 1/5-1/15 shutter speed and 3.5-5.6 fstop (am i writing all that properly? probably not. forgive me.)

you'll see, as you go through this set, that i clearly began practicing at work and harassed the shit out of my employees. thank you to greg for tolerating me while i messed with settings and thank you to david for, when you showed up and i surprised you by taking a photo, not killing me.

so here are some photos i really liked for your viewing pleasure!
